At least thirteen people perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
